Driving in North Cyprus: A Tourist's Guide
Planning to rent a car in North Cyprus? Understanding local driving rules will make your trip safer and more enjoyable. Here's everything you need to know about driving in the TRNC in 2026.
Left-Hand Traffic
North Cyprus follows left-hand traffic, a legacy of British colonial rule. This means you drive on the left side of the road, and the steering wheel is on the right side of the vehicle. If you're used to right-hand traffic, take extra care at roundabouts and intersections.
Required Documents
- Valid driving licence: EU, UK, Turkish and most international licences are accepted
- Passport or ID: Required for the rental agreement
- Minimum age: 21 years (under-25 surcharge may apply)
- Payment: Credit card, cash or cryptocurrency at KKTC Rental
Speed Limits
- Urban areas: 50 km/h (31 mph)
- Rural roads: 80 km/h (50 mph)
- Motorways: 100 km/h (62 mph)
Road Conditions
Main roads between Nicosia, Kyrenia, Famagusta and Ercan Airport are well-maintained dual carriageways. Rural roads in the Karpaz Peninsula may be narrower and less maintained. Watch for wild donkeys on the road, especially in eastern regions.
Insurance
All rental vehicles from KKTC Rental come with mandatory third-party insurance. Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) is available as an add-on to reduce your excess in case of damage. We recommend full coverage for peace of mind.
Fuel
Petrol stations are widely available in towns and on main highways. Prices are typically displayed per litre. Important: Fill up before heading to the Karpaz Peninsula, as there are no stations beyond Dipkarpaz village.
Parking
Free parking is available in most towns. In Kyrenia old town and Nicosia city centre, designated car parks are available for a small fee. Never park on double yellow lines.
Emergency Numbers
- Police: 155
- Ambulance: 112
- Fire: 199
